Obituary for Joan Lucille Walter

Joan Lucille Walter, loving wife, mother and grandmother, 73, of Silt, Colorado passed away surrounded by her family and caregivers July 29, 2015. Joan was born December 28, 1941 in Cedaredge, Colorado to Bruce and Lucille Phippeny. She married the love of her life Phil Walter August 16, 1964 in Eckert, Colorado, and they celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2014. Joan grew up on a family farm in Eckert, Colorado where she was surrounded by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She graduated from CU Boulder, Colorado in 1964 with a B.S in elementary education and a minor in Church Organ music; she was an accomplished musician, artist, seamstress, and gardener, who loved exploring back roads and hiking with her dogs. Joan was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Glenwood Springs Art Guild. Joan suffered a stroke in 2002 after brain surgery and fought to watch her son and daughter marry and to see her grandchildren grow. Joan is survived by her husband, son, John Walter (Lisa) of Washington, DC, daughter Marcia Randol (Denver) of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, brother Dale Phippeny (Ruth) of Nucla, Colorado, sister Karen Leonard (Jerry) of Grand Junction, Colorado, mother Lucille Phippeny, of Nucla, Colorado, grandchildren Aiden Walter, Kaytlin and Connor Randol and many nieces and nephews. Joan is preceded in death by her father Bruce Phippeny and mother in law Jennie Walter. A funeral service will be held Monday August 10, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church at 1016 Cooper Avenue in Glenwood Springs, Colorado with a burial to follow at White Hill Cemetery in Carbondale, Colorado. In lieu of flowers family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley at P.O. Box 3768, Basalt, Colorado 81621.
