Obituary for Edna Mae Coleman Sample

Edna Sample
August 10, 1925-December 13, 2022
Edna Sample passed away peacefully on December 13, 2022 at Roaring Fork Senior Care in Glenwood Springs. Edna was born on August 10, 1925 in a cabin along East Elk Creek, just north of New Castle. Edna grew up along the creek and kept busy helping on the farm, going to school and participating in
4-H. She graduated from New Castle High School and was married to Ralph Sample on July 26, 1942. She didn’t have to move too far to start married life because the Sample Grey Eagle Ranch was only a few miles up the creek. While working on the ranch and raising three children (John, Jeanette, and Larry) Edna still found time to drive to countless high school football and basketball games and serve on the New Castle School Board. She was bookkeeper for Our Co-op in Silt, Assistant Librarian for Garfield County in New Castle, in the Women’s Reading Club and Extension Club. She was a founding member of the New Castle Historical Society and on the committee that organized the first Burning Mountain Festival. She was active in local and state Grange and was a life-long member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in New Castle. The Town of New Castle issued an official proclamation making September 1, 2009 “Edna Sample Day”!
Edna loved camping and travelling. She and Ralph enjoyed whatever the locale had to offer, whether camping on Cline Top or visiting a sheep station in New Zealand. Their travels took them far and wide. They visited many places in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. There were also trips to Mexico, Australia, New Zealand,England, and Ireland. Wherever they went, Colorado was always home.
Edna is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, and her brothers Lewis, Albert, and Warren. She is survived by her three children, John (Pam) Sample, Jeanette Davidson, and Larry (Linda) Sample, as well as four grandchildren: Lonnie (Ann) Davidson, Jennifer (Steve) Coggins, Angie Rowland, and Wesley (Laudelina) Rowland. Six great grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Liam Davidson; Haley Ray, Kolby, and Jacob Coggins, and Reese Rowland. She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in New Castle on January 7, 2023 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Homecare and Hospice of the Valley (https://hchotv.org/), St. John’s Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 82 New Castle, Colorado 81647, or a charity of your choice.
