Obituary for Guadalupe Rita "Lupie" Gonzales

Guadalupe Rita (Lupie) Gonzales, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, and matriarch, passed peacefully on March 3, 2022. She was born in Del Carbon, Colorado on September 8, 1926, yes, she was 95 years old. Lupie is survived by her; three children, Phyllis Wittet, Jean Gonzales (Delane) and Rita Niemi; grandchildren Amanda Schard (Bryan), Nikki Sims (Harrel), Kacy Bouley (Nathan), Sashia Patterson (Craig), Stevi Wittet, Michael J. Palomino; and ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Lucy Ribali and Nora Carlson. She is preceded in death by her husband Jose Filbert Gonzales and son Filbert Michael Gonzales, who gave his life to serve his country in the Vietnam War; brothers Clarence Garbiso, Johnny Garbiso, Cobie Garbiso and Phillip Garbiso; two sons-in-law Steve Wittet and Randy Niemi. Fil met Lupie Garbiso in Walsenburg, Colorado and they married on January 18, 1947 in Raton, New Mexico. They were married for 74 years. They moved from Helper, Utah to Glenwood Springs in 1960, where they made their home with their four children for over 60 years. Lupie was a die-hard Bronco fan. On game day she would be at the Eagles Lodge cheering on the Broncos! She spent her time volunteering for various events sponsored by the Eagles Lodge. She cooked countless pots of her infamous green or red chili for potlucks; fund raising events or just because someone ask for pot of chili. The family would like to thank mom’s caregivers at Sopris Home Care (Dionne), Renew Roaring Fork and Heritage Park Care Center for all the love and respect they showed her.
The services will be Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 11:00 am at Farnum Holt Funeral Home followed by graveside service at Rosebud Cemetery in Glenwood Springs.
