Obituary for Martin Scott Zemlock

Martin Zemlock peacefully left this earth on February 21, 2015, with his family at his side. He was 77 years old. Martin was a lifetime resident of Glenwood Springs. He loved his community and the people who lived in it. He was a friend to all he met and enjoyed helping everyone. Martin wore many hats in his lifetime. His most treasured roles were those of son, brother, husband, father and grandpa. As a young man, Martin served his country for 6 years in the United States Army Reserves where he attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

Martin operated Zemlock & Son Sand and Gravel, was a meter technician for Holy Cross electric, a maintenance man for Glenwood Medical, a Boy Scout leader and a Cub Master for 13 years. He spent 38 years as a volunteer with the Glenwood Springs Fire Department. He was a Captain at the time of his last shift. After attending all of their school years together, Martin married Eleanor Zancanella on September 14, 1963. They were married 51 years. Martin and Eleanor were named citizens of the year in 1984 by the Glenwood Springs Chamber of Commerce. They were also awarded the distinguished Silver Beaver from the Western Colorado Boy Scout council. Martin was also given the district award of merit from the Boy Scout council. Martin was honored by the Colorado House of Representatives and State Representative Scott McInnis for his dedicated service with the fire department. Martin enjoyed traveling and for several years spent time between Glenwood Springs and Casa Grande, Arizona.

Spending time in the yard, filling bird feeders and firing up the grill for family time were moments he looked forward to. Martin also loved a plate of warm, homemade pastries and a big glass of milk.

Martin was very well known in the community for his elaborate and scary Halloween decorations, always in full costume himself.

Martin leaves behind his wife Eleanor, sons Scott (Sahara Kong) of Long Beach, CA, Mike (Diane) of Fontana, CA, Joe (Debbie) of Rifle, CO, and Andrew of Waverly, OH. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren — Christian, Michael, Tynan, Garrett, Martin, Amelia, Joey and Mary and one great-grandson Ryker Todd. Also surviving is Martin’s sister Dawn (Lee) Gibson of Holland Patent, NY, Mother-in-law Ruth Zancanella of Glenwood Springs, Sister-in-Law Grace Zancanella and many nieces and nephews. Martin joins his parents Andy and Ruth Zemlock, Father-in-law Lawrence “Bugo” Zancanella and Brother-in-law Lawrence “Buzz” Zancanella as well as many aunts and uncles at the Heavenly dinner table.

A rosary and viewing for Martin will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2015, starting at 5:00 PM with rosary at 7:00 PM at Farnum-Holt Funeral Home. Funeral mass will follow on Thursday, February 26, 2015, at 2:00 P.M. at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Glenwood Springs. Graveside services to follow at Rosebud Cemetery followed by a reception at St. Stephens Catholic Church.

Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley or to Cub Scout Pack 225 in Martin Zemlock’s honor.
